G. Komen For The Cure, one of over 100 Affiliates nationwide dedicated to putting an end to breast cancer, recently provided community grants totaling $48,676 to support Northern Indiana's area breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs.
The Komen Northern Indiana Affiliate's local fundraising efforts have enabled it to fund projects such as Client Advocate Program through Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana, which offers support services for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients; Mobile Medical Mammography for Minorities, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center South Bend, which provides free mammograms to minorities; 'Trae Una Amiga' − 'Bring a Friend' through Hispanic/Latino Health Coalition of Elkhart County, which will provide screening and education to Hispanic women of Elkhart County; Screening and Diagnostic Assistance through United Health Services, which will provide low cost mammograms to the underserved in North Central and Northwest Indiana; Advocacy and Counseling Services for Breast Cancer Patients in St. Joseph County through RiverBend Cancer Services, which will provide counseling to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients in St. Joseph County.
"In order to ensure our funds are making the greatest impact, the Komen Northern Indiana Affiliate works with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments," said Patty Collingwood, Komen Northern Indiana Affiliate Board President. "We have identified specific, unmet breast health needs within our community and 'filled in the gaps', delivering the life-saving message of early detection and providing assistance to medically-underserved breast cancer patients and their families."
